Film Review: Tycus

Posted in Tycus with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 28, 2010 by Higher Plain Music

A disaster movie about a comet causing havoc starring Dennis Hopper?! How did no one know about this film? Well… its a bit…rubbish. Well it’s not that its rubbish, its just it tries far too hard to be a jack of all trades and ends up being a master of none and skips all the big issues it could tackle by decending into the silly one liner territory.

The Premise

Tycus is a comet that everyone bar one man has said will never cause us a problem is actually going to crash into the moon and thus send various chunks of it down to Earth effectively ruining our way of life forever. However the rather rich man has decided to build a modern day Noahs Ark to house a select few people in but not everyone is happy with the rules.

The Disasters Faces

Comets, moon shardes, earthquakes, tornadoes, volcanoes, a dodgy lift and everyones general greediness!

The Execution

Tycus starts with the films ending, although you don’t actually know it is yet and in effect displays all its special effects shots in the first 10 minutes. After that you are introduced the most unloving married couple possibly paired in recent memory, the husband of which is a secret agent newspaper journalist who’s been a soldier… and that’s where it starts to get silly! The film bills itself as a disaster movie however the very brief disaster montages (which don’t look too bad for a low budget film) are blotted out for what turns more into an unfocused one soldier against all mission. Then when it flicks back to a race against time disaster movie the film ends up feeling very bitty and clumsy.

The acting varies on a vast scale. Dennis Hopper does the best he can with the script he’s got while our lead man Peter Onorati can’t quite balance serious and comical but that’s not down to his acting abilities, its the god awful script! Plot holes and general silliness in scene set ups make for things to feel even worse too.

The Effects

Miniatures are used to good effect in the film and although some of the special effects look quite dated now, they are actually better than a lot of the sheer awfulness some of the tv disaster movies try to put out these days. It also has to be said I was quite impressed at the varied stunts that took place and the large scale sets that were used for what appears to be a low budget release.

Why It’s Worth Watching

Well something kept me until the movies end (which was a bit strange I must say) and I think its the combination of seeing if anything would actually happen, to see how bad the one liners would get and to see how heavy handed the script writers would deal with the whole “who gets to live and die” overtone of the movie. As a result, they actually completely ignore it and stay with a bitching session for the entire second half of the movie. It’s quite good then for being a mindless popcorn flick if you like to pick holes in the film after!

Favourite Character

Slim pickings for this movie as there’s no real character development at all but the plane flying commander (Blake Scott) is probably the best character in the movie as the stereotypical crazed nutcase that every disaster movie must have.
Best Death

I could see it coming from a mile off but the only death that made any sense at all was Dennis Hoppers as if to hammer home the whole “help as many as you can” motto that’s bashed over your head constantly.

Weirdest Moment

Some of the awful one liners are so clumsy they jar you but the whole preachy ending with a couple of people sat in a feild reading the film out of a story book as if its some fable was really quite random and therefore wins the award!

Conclusion

Tycus is a silly, unfocused melodrama between two men who both spend the entire film screwing each other over to justify their own means and end up being both hypocritical and self centered. This combined with some really bad plot holes, semi shoddy effects and a vast range of acting abilities (and inserted comedy moments?!?) make for a film that is just as good to watch on its bad merits as it is trying to take it on face value. Best served with a beer and some popcorn!

Film Review: Airspeed

Posted in Airspeed with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 19, 2010 by Higher Plain Music

Spoilt brat gets on plane, plane gets damaged, spoilt girl says she’s so sorry for being a spoilt girl, plane saved… and we’ve all been there! Welcome to Airspeed, the mid air family drama…!

The Premise

In is a completely impossible premise, a private jet is hit by lightning which electricutes the crew and blows a hole in the cabin! Cue only uninjured teenage brat to come and save the day!

The Disasters Faced

Lightning, various dogdgy rescue attempts, hammy acting and a girl whose face you’d love to slap!

The Execution

Firstly I’ll start off by saying for a TV movie its really not that bad. There is some awful acting and sometimes the camera stays on something a beat too long (for example when a rescuer falls out the plane we’re treated to our teen girl screaming “noooo” and holding out her hand… then it stays there, and she could do a little pom-pom dance) but on the whole things are quite respectful. The actual disaster happens 15 minutes in after a quick pre amble which sets up your main lady as a precious little moo who just wants her parents love but they’re busy running a big business. The whole family theme runs throughout the movie and is bashed over the head a little bit. Once the big bang’s happened, new situations occur quite regularly and everything ticks along at a good pace and the fact the films only 84 minutes long keeps it fresh enough to hold your attention. It’s main problems stem from the wide range of acting talent and the fact the whole situation just could never happen anyway (not that we’d let that stop us enjoying a good movie).

The Effects

Effects are pretty grim it has to be said, but then they are used very sparcely and kept to quick plane shots which are dark and muddy to hide the low budget effect. Some of the props wobble (notably the plane dashboard!) but generally as the director has wisely focused on keeping the cameras straight on the people and not on the sorroundings, everything is passable.

Why It’s Worth Watching

Airspeed is kind of difficult to recommend as it does nothing new nor does it do anything overly well or badly. If you enjoy cliched scripts and hammed up acting however, Airspeed is quite entertaining, as is the Elisha Cuthbert’s screaming on occasion! There’s also a superbly wooden pilot too to keep you amused.

Favourite Character

While I was tempted to go with the lead (Elisha Cuthbert) for her landing segment in the film, Lynne Adams who plays the mother out acts everyone in the movie by a mile although she is severely underused and left to babble “My baby” all the way through the film, she does it well!

Best Death

Well there’s only one and that’s the rescue worker who gets blown out the plane… but that cues up for the best “noooo” in the film.

Weirdest Moment

While the whole premise is weird in itself, Captain Lopez gets the award for his absolute robotic monotone approach to speaking which is so jarring and unnatural, you could be forgiven for thinking its a comedy.

Conclusion

Airspeed is utter mediocrity in everything it does. It contains a tried and tested formula, a cliche ridden script, actors who are trying to lift themselves up above the melodrama but generally failing and some unintentionally funny moments. Just like an average TV disaster movie then I hear you say? Exactly, you get exactly what you see on the tin!

On the special 2 Disc edition (seemingly a Reigion 1 only release, oh the joys of a multiregion DVD player) there are some great making of featurettes. There has been an uploaded part of one which you can view here. Irwin Allen is such a showman!

Film Trailer & IMDB: A Night to Remember

The absoutely beautiful “A Night to Remember” is for a lot of people their choice of film when it comes to Titanic. For those of you that haven’t taken the journey with it, here’s the film trailer and IMDB page. Also if you’re going for the DVD I recommend the dual disc edition which on the flip side has loads of making of stuff which is quite unusual for a film so old!

A late entry into the airplane disaster movie genre in the 90′s was “Airspeed”. The usual lightning hits plane, random girl has to land it story! Here’s the trailer and the IMDB page and now it’s arrived at my door, I’ll look forward to reviewing in the coming weeks. Check out the “nooooo” at the end. It’s gonna be good :)
