As the title suggests, I Love Disaster Movies is getting back into production again. The last “new” review came in August 2023, and whilst I’d updated some minor bits of the site elsewhere across 2024, those changes were minimal. I’m delighted to say the site will be back to regular updates this month and for the foreseeable future.
During 2023, my dad became ill with colon cancer and dementia, following a period of illness in 2022, which is when the site updates started to slow down. In October 2023, my dad had a fall and a brain injury, which then hastened his dementia and general confusion. He was in hospital for two and a half months, then a brain rehabilitation centre, and then a care home. At the same time, my mum collapsed under the stress of it all, no doubt, and was placed in a coma. The first few months of 2024, I spent split between keeping mum on an upward trajectory, whilst trying to support dad’s rapid decline as best as possible, and keeping a day job going too.
Usually, disaster movies are my “at least I’m not having that kind of bad day” go-to relaxation. Not only did I not have the time, but I simply lost all enthusiasm for doing anything else. A few mindless games or a cathartic album to confide in got me by. My dad passed away in April 2024, whilst my mum is very much with us, albeit requiring a lot of support. The world doesn’t stand still, and I hate that fact. This world is decided cruel when it comes to loss, and so I chopped back on some of my commitments just to keep myself going, with I Love Disaster Movies being one of them.
I needed some time to process things before I could enjoy the peril of a disaster movie again, and I think I’ve done that. Thank you for your patience during the last 2 years. There’s been plenty of new disaster movies released, and I’ve still got a backlog of previously reviewed movies to rewrite to the current review format. I’m looking forward to getting stuck in.
Cheers,
Si
